That is a small part of Ben Tre, on Tien River , between My Tho and Ben Tre provinces. Phung Island was called as “ Coconut monk ” Island as it used to be a place for a monk who had just fruits for foods. Specially, coconut!
This island has a lot of canals, coconuts and water palms. It remains almost the whole things of that religions as well as their architecture.
Some other spots in Phung Island such as snake farm ( if you can enjoy having the enormous python wrapped around you), the crocodile farm, the handicraft village that its material is from coconut shells.

For the moment, the banh trang, banh phong (rice paper cakes) in My Long and Son Doc, Giong Trom District, are still best known for their fine taste. Though the main materials to make these cakes are husked rice and sticky rice, the makers of the cakes seem to hold their know-how in secret and are very resolute to keep them from being leaked to outsiders. They are also keen to renovate such know-how secrets to produce finer and finer cakes to serve up to modern consumers. By this way, they not only sell the stuffs but also help spread their local identity out to other regions and the world.

On arrival at Bến Tre’s Hùng Vương pier located opposite the hotel of the same name we will set off in a boat down the Bến Tre River, a tributary of the Mekong River. Along the river you will witness the daily activities of the local people such as fishing, transportation of people and cargo and the many industries that process coconuts, Ben Tre’s number one commodity.
Our first jumping off point is at a brickworks factory to see how they make traditional style bricks from the clay found under the topsoil of nearby rice fields. The processes used have changed little over time and still use the old brick kilns and rice husks to bake the bricks. Next stop is one of the numerous coconut processing workshops located along the main canal. We will be shown how they briskly remove the husk of the coconut which is sent to local factories to be used for making mats, and then the inner flesh which is removed from the shell and cleaned and later sent to be processed into various products such as dried coconut shavings, coconut oil and coconut milk.

After a short boat trip we will alight and take a pleasant walk through a small village to a modest family workshop making sleeping mats. There we learn how to weave from thin strips of bamboo and enjoy some fresh fruits and tea. From there we use another local means of transport the motor cart (xe lôi) or ride bicycles down the narrow tree shaded lanes, passing by green rice fields as well as fruit and vegetable plantations. Here in these quaint village hamlets you get to experience the relaxed simplicity of life and down-to-earth hospitality of the locals. A short distance further passing over small bridges and past some old traditional style homes (some of which are home stays) we stop for lunch at the “Green Coconut” canal side restaurant or Hai Hồ’s house.
Once we have finished savoring the local cuisine we will travel by canoe through coconut palm and water coconut (Quả dừa nuóc) fringed canals and dock back at Hùng Vương Pier.
